Jackson McVey’s offseason has been adorned with awards and honors, and he recieved another noteworthy distinction.
He wrapped up his junior basketball season at Gilmer High in February and was named to yet another all-state list. McVey was one of five players selected to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Class 3A first team.
Joining McVey on the team are Sandy Creek seniors Micah Smith and Amari Brown, Hebron Christian senior Blake Wilson and sophomore Manny Green of Cedar Grove.
McVey capped his junior campaign with 26.2 points, 15.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game. He shot 65.3 percent from the field, led Region 7-3A in all four statistical categories and was named its player of the year.
This marks McVey’s third selection to an all-state first team for the 2023-24 season. He was named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s Class 3A all-state team last month. He was also selected to Sandysspiel.com’s Class 3A all-state squad, and received an honorable mention to its all-classification team.
McVey ended March with 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists in the annual Georgia Basketball Coaches Association’s Junior All-Star Game. He was voted the game’s MVP for his efforts.
The Bobcats are fresh off their first ever region championship. They enjoyed a third straight state tournament appearance, which included a first round victory.
Through three seasons at GHS, McVey has racked up 1,404 points. He is currently the program’s career record holder in blocks (168) and rebounds (864). He has also set the seasonal standard for field goal percentage (65.3), field goals made (284), rebounds (407) and blocks (77).
When it comes to game records, McVey is tops in rebounds (30), field goals (21) and blocks (11).
McVey will spend the offseason playing at top tournaments with Team Curry, based out of Charlotte, N.C. He is currently ESPN’s No. 9 ranked player in Georgia and rated as a four-star prospect. He maintains a 4.12 grade-point average and has received scholarship offers from Kennesaw State, Western Carolina and Western Kentucky. He is being actively recruited by Georgia Tech, Georgia, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt and South Carolina.
