The Gilmer Lady Cats were on the field for the final soccer games of their region slate.
Gilmer took on Northwest Whitfield (8-6 record) last Tuesday, and the hometown Bruins kept the Cats off the scoreboard for a 3-0 win. GHS returned to the friendly confines of Huff-Mosley Memorial Stadium Friday to host LaFayette (8-7). While the Cats did crack the scoreboard, the Ramblers came away with a 2-1 victory.
Northwest’s win was paved with a goal in the first half. The Bruins netted two additional goals over the final 40 minutes to cement their shutout win.
Versus LaFayette, possession was split almost evenly. Gilmer created chances and attempted nine shots on the day compared to 10 for the Ramblers.
The Cats struck first with just under 15 minutes left in the opening half. A through ball by Joei Marshall was tracked down by Selina Tercero, who sprinted past Rambler defenders. She scored from 10 yards out.
However, GHS was unable to clear the ball just outside the box moments later. It rolled to an unmarked Rambler, and her 20-yard goal evened the score.
The Ramblers scored the go-ahead goal late in the second half. They were awarded a free kick and sent the ball into the net from 30 yards. The Cats could not equalize over the final 13 minutes.
The loss dropped the Cats’ record to 5-10. They posted a 1-5 mark in region play and hosted Dalton (10-4) at press deadline.
