The Gilmer High Lady Cats ran away with first place to continue their track and field season.
GHS attended the five-team meet last Wednesday in Calhoun, and the Cats took first over host the Yellow Jackets, 122-105.
The Lady Cats’ earned their top team finish by scoring points on 19 occasions in running events. In six events, multiple Lady Cats earned points.
Amayah Jones’ time of 12.99 was the fastest in the 100-meter dash, and she was trailed by teammate Kenzie Sewell in fourth place (13.62). Gilmer owned the 400 meters with Sofia El Khorchi (1:08.54) finishing first and followed by Isabella Evans (1:08.72) and Jace Sanderson (1:09.13) in second and third place, respectively.
The Cats also won the 4x400 relay. El Khorchi, Evans, Morgan Palmeri and Sanderson’s time of 4:40 was 6 seconds better than the runner-up. Teaming up for a second-place time of 12:49 in the 4x800 were Jennifer Garcia, Liz Gonzalez, Madison Hall and Stephanie Velasco.
Finishing second through fourth in the 200 meters were Gilmer’s Jones (27.63), Chastain (28.17) and Sewell (28.35). In the 800, Sanderson crossed the finish line in second (2:45) and Hall was fourth (2:59).
In distance events, GHS earned five placements. In the 3,200, Garcia finished second (14:24), Jayla Walker was third (15:57) and Velasco was fourth (19:00). When it came to the mile, Garcia clocked in at 6:48 for third and Walker placed fourth in 6:59.
Chastain, Jones, Palmeri and Sewell finished the 4x100 relay in 57.20 for third.
Lady Cats won throwing events as Jones was No. 1 in the shot put (34’ 1”) and Lilyan Cook placed first in the discus at 102’ 2”.
Presley Chancey jumped 30’ 6 1/2” for second in the triple jump and Addie Vice was fourth at 26’ 10 1/2”. Placing fourth were Cook (shot, 29’ 3”), Sewell (high jump, 4’ 8”) and Palmeri ((long jump, 13’ 2”). Patterson was fifth in the discus (74’ 5”) as was Sanderson in the high jump (4’ 4”).
Bobcat Douglas Callihan heaved the shot put 46” 1’ for second. The Bobcat 4x400 relay team of Seth Turner, Max New, Jeremy Martinez and Edward Marietta teamed up for a runner-up time of 9:58.
Clocking third-place times were Dawson Richard (800, 2:14) and Leeland Dantin (400, 56.13). Richard was also third in the 1,600 in 5:02 and New placed fourth at 5:06. In the pole vault, Cheyne Smith and Jett Burrell both cleared 9’, but the former took fourth because fewer attempts were needed.
Behind GHS and Calhoun in the girls standings were Cass (67), Southeast Whitfield (50) and Adairsville (23). Calhoun (137) was the No. 1 boys team ahead of Cass (89), Southeast (68), Adairsville (54) and GHS (34). Gilmer will host its second meet of the season today at 4 p.m.
