Gilmer High School has embarked on its region softball schedule and the Lady Cats were defeated in both games.
GHS hit the road twice last week and first made its way to Lumpkin County Tuesday. The Indians’ two-run fifth inning was enough to claim a 2-1 win.
Gilmer made the trek to White County two days later, and GHS was limited to two hits while committing four defensive errors. All of the Warriors’ runs were unearned as the Cats fell, 5-1.
The Cats struck for their lone run in the fourth inning versus Lumpkin. Macy Hamby singled to left, stole second and scored on an Indian error. Jacie Bennett and Phoenix Addie both advanced into scoring position, but GHS was unable to take advantage.
A Lady Cat error sandwiched between Indian doubles allowed Lumpkin to pull ahead 2-1 in the fifth. GHS batters were retired in order over their final two at-bats.
In addition to Hamby, Maddie Wright, Bennett and Addie each had a hit for GHS. Lily Fortune got the start and pitched 4 1/3 innings. She struck out four, walked three and gave up an earned run on six hits. Hamby took over for the final 1 2/3 innings and struck out two and walked two.
Fortune got GHS on the board in the third versus White. Her base hit to right field scored Gracie Smith, who singled with one out. A Warrior hit batsman with the bases loaded in their half of the inning evened the score.
In the fourth, a WCHS hit to center was followed by an error as the Warriors took a 2-1 lead. A hit batter and GHS throwing error loaded the bases. A sacrifice bunt plated a third run, and a two-out doubled scored two more.
Smith drew a walk in the fifth as she was the only Lady Cat to reach base for GHS over the final three innings. Wright and Hamby also had a hit on the day for Gilmer.
Fortune tossed four innings and gave up five hits while striking out one and walking one. Hamby pitched the fifth and sixth innings and struck out one.
GHS has a 3-5 overall record and hosts Wesleyan Thursday with the first pitch set for 6 p.m.
