The Gilmer Lady Cats remain undefeated in region play.
GHS was in Calhoun last Friday, and the host Yellow Jackets took a one-goal lead into the halftime locker room. However the Cats showed plenty of resolve in the second half and netted two goals for a 2-1 road victory.
Gilmer’s week began at Pickens Monday, and the Dragonettes notched a 5-1 rivalry win.
At Calhoun, both teams dealt with windy conditions that led to tactical changes for both teams, according to GHS coach Adam Palmer.
CHS scored the game’s opening goal after 18 minutes of play. Gilmer goalkeeper Amayah Jones’ punt was controlled by a Calhoun player near midfield, and the Jackets quickly sliced their way past the Cats. Three passes between two players followed and a close shot gave CHS the lead.
It took GHS some time to equalize, and that came with 23:01 on the clock. Angelica Castaneda picked off a CHS pass in a threatening position just outside the box. She passed to Yenifer Lopez, who centered a pass to a wide open Calli Wise. Her 20-yard shot hit the crossbar and shot straight down. Lady Cat Allison Hernandez was there to head the ball, which landed in the path of a charging Calhoun defender, who inadvertently knocked the ball into the net for an own goal.
Nearly thirteen minutes later, Wise took the ball from a CHS player and fed the ball to teammate Sophia Lykins at the midfield stripe. She sent the ball over the top to a sprinting Lopez, who was fouled in the box. Lopez calmly placed the penalty kick in the bottom right corner for the go-ahead goal.
GHS held on over the final 10:23 to improve to 5-3 overall and 2-0 versus region opponents.
Pickens led 2-0 at halftime Monday, and Gilmer’s goal came 11 minutes into the second half. Lopez received a pass just beyond midfield, and she passed a through ball to Wise down the right wing. Wise’s shot from inside the box from a tight angle crossed the goal line at the far post.
Pickens added three more goals to earn the win.
“I am very proud of the team so far this season and the results they have achieved,” said Palmer.
The Lady Cats hosted Adairsville at press deadline and will travel to Ridgeland Friday for a 5:30 p.m. match.
