The Gilmer Lady Cats claimed two medal spots and included a tournament champion at their latest wrestling event.
GHS attended the Campbell Lady Spartan Invitational last Saturday. Abelinda Tercero (135 pounds) rolled through her bracket for first place. Erika Tercero (235) placed third and lost a tough match to last year’s state runner-up, according to head coach Stacy Galloway.
Galloway also praised LucyAnn McArthur (155) for “wrestling well and showing a strong effort against tough competition.”
In the junior varsity division, Gracie Cox (100) was the top wrestler in a combined 100–105 bracket.
Lady Cats Gladys Lopez, J.J. McArthur and Jessica Lucas all took the mat at 145 pounds. Lopez defeated both teammates on her way to a third-place finish.
“We had a great weekend of wrestling, and I’m proud of the improvements every one of our girls showed from the week before,” Galloway said. “One of the reasons I like taking the team to this event is that they run a JV bracket. This gives our freshmen more favorable matchups instead of immediately facing sectional or state qualifiers and placers like many of them did last week at Jefferson.
“Overall, it was a strong showing for our Lady Cats, and we’re continuing to build momentum each week. I’m proud of this group.”
