The Gilmer Lady Cats lost a heart breaker to rival Pickens.
GHS was in Jasper last Tuesday, and the Dragonnettes rallied in the final inning to get the win. PHS erased the Cats’ one-run edge in the bottom of the seventh, and Gilmer returned to Ellijay with a 3-2 loss.
The Cats hosted Southeast Whitfield Monday and secured a 4-1 nonregion win over the Raiders.
Against Pickens, GHS tallied both of its runs in the third without the need of a hit. Gracie Smith drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base on Chesney Mathews’ sacrifice bunt. Maddie Wright gave GHS its second base runner after she was hit by a pitch. A two-out error plated both runners for a 2-0 edge.
PHS trimmed the Cats’ advantage in the fifth. A base hit to center came before two wild pitches. PHS cut Gilmer’s lead to 2-1 with a sacrifice fly. Two innings later, Pickens got the seventh going with a base hit to center and a bunt. An ensuing double gave PHS the runs needed for the win.
Phoenix Addie and Jacie Bennett each had a hit for Gilmer as Pickens outhit the Cats 10-2. Lily Fortune tossed six innings, struck out five, walked two and gave up three earned runs.
Versus Southeast, Gilmer made the most of its four hits, and all of its runs came in the third inning.
Mathews started the third when she reached on an error before GHS used some small ball tactics. A.J. Allen got to first safely with a bunt. Wright’s bunt resulted in a Raider error and Mathews scored.
Addie bunted home Allen to move GHS ahead, 2-1. Bennett put the ball in play and another Raider error scored two more Gilmer runs.
An RBI single tallied Southeast’s lone run in the second inning, and the Raiders were limited to three hits.
Fortune earned the win and pitched a complete game. She struck out 12, walked two and the Raiders’ run was unearned.
GHS has an 8-12 overall record and wrapped up the regular season Tuesday versus Dawson County.
