The Gilmer High Lady Cats split their region softball games last week.
GHS traveled to Wesleyan Tuesday, and the Wolves’ six-run fifth inning allowed them to bring a premature end to the game in an 8-0 victory. The Cats were on the road two days later at West Hall. GHS bounced back as timely hits evaded the Spartans, and the Cats earned a 5-1 win.
Macy Hamby and Zoey Woody each had a hit versus Wesleyan, and that accounted for all of Gilmer’s offense.
For the Wolves, they struck for two runs in their first at-bat. Wesleyan strung together a triple between two doubles for an early lead, but no more runs came until the fifth inning.
Wesleyan started the frame with three extra base hits that included a double, triple and home run for a 5-0 edge. The Wolves loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a hit batter. An ensuing walk plated their sixth run before a two-run single ended the game.
All of the Wolves’ runs were earned. Gilmer’s Lily Fortune pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up 11 hits, struck out three and walked one.
Consecutive hits by Hamby and Maddie Wright plated the first run in the third inning versus West Hall. Wright then trotted home on Jacie Bennett’s double to right.
Up 2-0 in the fifth inning, the Cats added their third run on a two-out Fortune hit to center. Hamby sent a two-run homer over the center field fence in the sixth for the Cats’ remaining runs.
WHHS scored its lone run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly out. Fortune earned the complete game victory. She struck out four, walked one and surrendered six hits.
Hamby and Wright each had two hits while Fortune, Bennett and Woody had one apiece.
GHS is 7-11 overall, which includes a 3-7 region mark. The Cats traveled to Pickens at press deadline and host Southeast Whitfield next Monday at 5 p.m.
