Three Gilmer High football players have been recognized for their standout play on the gridiron.
Earning a spot on the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association’s all-state north squad are senior lineman offensive Sam Jones, junior linebacker Douglas Callihan and junior running back Peyton Chancey.
“I’m very excited for our team and for these individuals. It’s a great honor for our kids,” said head coach Paul Standard. “With the GACA, the all-state team was voted on by the eight region champion coaches in Class 3A. I’m just very happy for our guys.”
Jones was a four-year starter on the offensive line for GHS and this marks his second all-state selection in a row. He anchored a line that paved the way for 3,189 rushing yards, 41 touchdowns and 29 points per game.
Callihan is a three-year starter and he also earned all-state honors as a sophomore.
The led the Bobcats in total tackles (79) and sacks (5.5). He broke up four passes, returned an interception for a touchdown, forced a fumble and recovered one. Following the season, he was named the region’s co-defensive player of the year.
Three-year starter Chancey was the team’s top ground gainer. He played 10 games with a knee injury and ran for 1,065 yards and 22 touchdowns. He had a game-high 209 yards at Fannin to begin the season.
