Gilmer High School freshman Madden Hopkins is a wrestling state champion.
While the high school season is over, USA Wrestling has taken center stage. Hopkins attended USAW’s Freshman State Tournament Feb. 23 as a member of the Bobcat Wrestling Club. He posted a 3-0 record to win the 190-pound state title.
Hopkins’ tournament began with a pin versus Jackson Yilales before an 8-1 decision in the semifinals over Wolfgang Wright.
In the finals, Hopkins faced Matthew Polcyn, and his second pin of the event secured his state championship.
Bobcat heavyweight Rojelio Zavala also took the mat and he earned one victory.
