The Gilmer High Lady Cats got back in the win column with a region softball victory.
GHS was at home last Thursday versus Lumpkin County, and Macy Hamby was there for two home runs. Gilmer enjoyed the lead until the Indians’ final at-bat. LCHS slipped ahead, but the Cats responded with two runs in their half of the seventh for a 5-4 win.
Gilmer hosted White County two days earlier, and the Warriors earned a commanding 9-0 victory.
Versus Lumpkin, Hamby hit a one-out double in the third inning. Maddie Wright did the same for a 1-0 edge. In the fifth, Hamby blasted a one-out homer to center. Wright singled and eventually scored on Lily Fortune’s single to right.
Behind 3-0 in the seventh, LCHS strung together a single, double, walk and triple to even the score. A fielder’s choice allowed the Indians to pull ahead, 4-3.
The usual suspects were there to lift GHS past Lumpkin in the bottom of the inning. Hamby promptly evened the score with a leadoff home run over the center field fence. Wright reached on an infield hit and advanced to third on an error. She raced home on a grounder hit by Fortune.
Hamby and Wright both had three hits and Fortune finished with two. Fortune pitched 6 2/3 innings, gave up four hits, two earned runs and struck out six and walked one. Hamby tossed 1/3 of an inning, walked one and gave up a hit and a pair of earned runs.
GHS had three hits versus White County, which were tallied by Hamby, Wright and Zoey Woody. Three Gilmer errors led to two unearned Warrior runs. WCHS scored two runs in the second inning, four in the third and three in the fourth, and the game was called after the Cats’ fifth inning at-bat.
Hamby pitched the first 2 2/3 innings. She walked and struck out one, and allowed four hits and six earned runs. Fortune made a relief appearance and went 2 1/3 innings. She gave up two hits, an earned run and struck out one and walked one.
The Cats are 6-10 overall and traveled to Wesleyan at press deadline. GHS will make its way to West Hall Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
