The Sean Glaze basketball era has come and gone.
Glaze resigned from his position as Gilmer High School’s boys basketball head coach last Wednesday. He was hired July 2025 and he submitted his letter of resignation the day after the Bobcats’ region tournament loss.
“When I accepted the role, I did so with sincere enthusiasm and a clear vision for building a program centered on accountability, effort and attention to detail — one that would consistently represent the school with pride and compete at a high level,” Glaze’s resignation letter stated.
“Over time, however, it has become clear that there is a significant misalignment between my expectations and the level of collective buy-in required to achieve them. As a result, I believe it is in the best interest of the program that I step down and invest my efforts elsewhere.”
It continued, “This decision was not made lightly. I care deeply about the players and sincerely hope the program moves forward with a renewed intensity and appreciation for coaching.”
In an interview, Glaze expressed gratitude to GHS principal Tiffany Boyette, athletic director Matt Johnson and county athletic director Paul Standard for their support and leadership. He also thanked the booster club for their continued support throughout the season.
“Having coached for 30 years and have had a good bit of success, I felt like I did a really good job with a number of things. I just don’t know if I was the right fit moving forward,” Glaze said. “My desire is that the kids have a great experience, that I enjoy myself and they enjoy themselves. I didn’t know if that was something that was going to be possible if I remained at the position.
“I hate that I wasn’t able to finish the job that I had taken to completion. That’s one of the very difficult things, is the mixed emotions of saying ‘goodbye’ is to know you didn’t necessarily finish what you started.”
Standard said the job opening has been posted on the school website and on various coaching sites. He said they have received interest from “multiple” applicants. They plan to interview top candidates in mid-March and fill the position soon after.
“Even though we have struggled this past season, this is still an outstanding opportunity for some coach that wants to come in here and build from the middle school on up,” Standard said. “There’s certainly passion within our program, within our parent group. They want to have a successful program. Our school system from the very top, wants to have successful programs and that includes our men’s basketball program.
“We’re in a good place in terms of being able to find the right candidate. They obviously have got to fit the bill, first from a teaching standpoint. We were in a very tight window this past year. I appreciate everything Coach Glaze did for our program in a tight spot.”
Gilmer was 7-18 under Glaze, and the Cats’ next head coach will be their third in as many seasons. He will continue to teach at GHS through the end of his contract, which expires July 1.
