The Northwest Georgia Swim and Dive Championship was hashed out in Calhoun.
The Gilmer High Bobcats and Lady Cats were in attendance along with 19 other schools.
The Lady Cats scored 40 points for a 13th place finish while the Bobcats tallied 16 points for 14th in the boys standings.
“GHS swim had a pretty good day,” said head coach Mary-Melissa May. “We were missing several girls so we didn’t have a full relay to compete, but Payton Woodring shattered records with her times for 100 fly and 100 back, setting pool records at the home of GHSA state champion Calhoun Yellow Jackets.”
Woodring accounted for all of the Lady Cats’ points. The University of Cincinnati bound swimmer’s record-setting first-place times were 56.98 in the 100-yard butterfly and 57.61 in the 100-yard backstroke.
Teammate Lyra May competed in the 50-yard freestyle prelims and posted a time of 35.35.
The Bobcats qualified for three finals. In the 200-freestyle relay, the team of Ian Berry, Kaden Little, Jacob Kucera and Law Lykins placed 12th in 1:46.87. Larz Fowler joined Little, Lykins and Berry for 14th in the 200-yard medley relay at 2:11.35.
The quartet of Kucera, Hayden Morrison, Ty Cox and Berry turned in a time of 4:75.11 in the 400-yard freestyle relay preliminaries but were disqualified in the finals.
Preliminary 50 free Bobcat times included Berry (26.45), Little (27.10), Fowler (28.07) and Morrison (31.63). In the 100 free prelims were Kucera (1:02.52), Little (1:05.11) and Morrison (1:09.43), while Fowler posted a time of 1:23.39 in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Cox finished in 2:38.81 in the 200 free.
“The boys 400 free relay cut almost 10 seconds from their best time in preliminaries,” May said. “Senior Ty Cox achieved a 10-second cut to make his personal best time in the 200 freestyle individual and was an alternate for the finals.
“Ian Berry got his personal best in his leg of the 400 freestyle, and all boys swam very competitive times. No state qualifiers yet for the boys, but they are working hard to get it before the end of the season.”
