The annual Tiger Plunge took Gilmer High swimmers to Adairsville.
The meet was held Saturday, Dec. 3, and Bobcat Law Lykins achieved a pair of state qualifying times. The Bobcats (142 points) placed sixth out of 19 teams. The GHS Lady Cats were shorthanded and ended their day with 24 points for 17th in the girls standings.
Lykins punched his ticket to state in the 100- butterfly (57.09) and 50-yard freestyle (23.60), which secured a third and fourth finish, respectively, at the event.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Lykins, Ian Berry, Larz Fowler and Jacob Kucera were the top team in 1:38.42. The same swimmers were runners-up in the 200 medley relay at 1:53.66.
GHS had five swimmers compete in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. In the 50, results included Kucera (fifth, 23.84), Berry (10th, 25.37), Fowler (14th, 26.28), Tanner Attebery (47th, 31.87) and Aspen Hataway (58th, 34.92).
In the 100, Kucera finished in 56.62 for seventh, and he was followed by Berry (eighth, 57.14), Fowler (13th, 1:00.10), Hataway (45th, 1:17.05) and Attebery (48th, 1:19.09).
Only four Lady Cat swimmers attended the event, and their top placement came in the 200 free relay. Esther Bowman, Yana Jones, Sophia Lykins and Taylor McCormick landed in 12th in 2:10.87. In the 200 medley relay, they clocked in at 2:32.61 for 15th.
All four also competed in the 50 and 100 free. Bowman led the way in the 50 at 30.30 for 14th. Next to touch the wall were McCormick (19th, 30.51), Lykins (28th, 32.35) and Jones (44th, 34.53).
Swimmers’ placements and times in the 100 included Bowman (14th, 1:08.60), McCormick (16th, 1:10.74), Lykins (21st, 1:14.04) and Jones (40th, 1:22.54).
McIntosh took first in the girls standings over Northgate, 375-305, and Pickens was third (177). Adairsville (258) was the top boys as McIntosh (231) and East Coweta (168) rounded out the top three.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats will return to the pool Saturday for Dalton’s Winter Invitational.
