Gilmer High volleyball secured its second win of the season.
The Lady Cats were in Dalton last Thursday to take on the host Catamounts and North Murray. Gilmer fell by respective scores of 2-0 and 2-1.
The Cats returned to Whitfield County Saturday for the annual Raider Rally tournament. GHS started the event by downing Sonoraville, 2-1. Gilmer then lost to Christian Heritage 2-0, as well as to both Southeast Whitfield and Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, 2-1.
At Dalton, the Catamounts won by set scores of 25-16 and 25-17. GHS lost the first set to North Murray 25-23 before winning the second, 25-18. The Mountaineers’ 15-8 triumph in the deciding set gave them the match.
While the Cats came out on the losing end, head coach Maria Huelsman said they received some positive feedback.
“The girls got the best compliment they’ve gotten from an official,” she said. “The referee said, ‘After looking at your record, it doesn’t say anything about actually how good you all are.’ We’ve just been hot and cold.”
Gilmer’s Saturday win versus Sonoraville got the Cats’ day underway. After losing the first set 25-12, GHS bounced back for wins of 26-24 and 15-9 to take the match.
“They’re a very good team,” Huelsman said of Sonoraville. “Hali Hice was blocking the ball straight down. She was on fire that match. That was the big thing for us. Our net play was outstanding defensively and they couldn’t do anything about it. If they did go up, they would swing away and send it out of bounds trying to get around the block.”
Hice racked up eight blocks in the match. Fellow senior Anneliese Vaughan was there for three blocks, while Madison Bradshaw blocked three Sonoraville shots. Vaughan added four kills, senior Libby Pike tallied three and Bradshaw finished with two. Libero Maddie Usry scored three aces.
GHS lost its match to Christian Heritage by scores of 25-9 and 25-18. Gilmer earned a 25-23 second set win over Southeast, but the Raiders won the first and second, 25-20 and 15-8.
The Cats also secured a second set victory over LFO, 25-21. The Indians won the match by scores of 25-16 and 15-6.
GHS hosted White County and West Hall at press deadline for senior night. The Cats will wrap up the regular season next week at Wesleyan.
