Gilmer High volleyball earned their second win of the season.
The Cats were in Murray County last Monday to take on the host Indians and Cass Colonels. MCHS came away with a 2-0 win, while Gilmer downed Cass, 2-1.
GHS hosted Dawson County and Pickens the following day and lost by respect scores of 2-1 and 2-0. The Cats ended their week Saturday at the Rally on the Ridge in Fannin County. Gilmer faced Union County, Pickens and Woodstock and dropped all three matches by a 2-0 margin.
When the Cats were at Murray, head coach Maria Huelsman noted teams dealt with some difficult playing conditions, which included uneven serving areas, overhanging basketball stanchions and a slick court.
MCHS earned wins of 25-12 and 25-18. Gilmer dropped its first set to Cass, 25-18, before wins of 25-22 and 15-10.
“The teams that played faced adversity with the court itself,” Huelsman said. “On one end line the girls had nine feet to serve, and on the other side they had 12 feet. On the court with more room to serve, a rim was hanging over the court. On the shorter court, the basketball goal was hanging over the baseline. The court was really slippery, and I was scared they were going to tear a knee.
“They played to the best of their ability. Again, you have to be able to play above and beyond that.”
GHS was able to pick up a first set win at home of 25-16 versus Dawson, but the Tigers won the next two, 25-15 and 16-14. Pickens notched victories of 25-14 and 25-13.
Saturday’s tournament saw Gilmer lose to Union (25-20, 25-16), Pickens (25-15, 25-19) and Woodstock (25-11, 25-10).
“We worked a lot on hitting last week,” Huelsman said. “But we have to learn how to figure it out. They need to figure out if they want to win and go on or tuck tail with the season and be done.”
GHS has a 2-14 overall record and returned to Fannin at press deadline. The Cats will be in Dawson Thursday for matches beginning at 5 p.m., and they will attend a Saturday tournament at Coahulla Creek.
