Calhoun’s Senior Night Meet gave swimmers a final opportunity to qualify for state.
The Gilmer High Bobcats and Lady Cats were one of five teams at the event for another tuneup. The hometown Yellow Jackets were the top team in the boys (889 points) and girls (523.5) standings.
The Bobcats were runners-up with 216 points, and the Lady Cats finished fourth with 201 on the girls side.
Both of the Bobcats’ relay teams placed third. In the 400-yard freestyle, Law Lykins, Hayden Morrison, Tanner Attebery and Ian Berry finished in 4:18.86. In the 200-yard medley, the team of Berry, Larz Fowler, Lykins and Cheyne Smith clocked in at 1:57.53.
Lykins went on to claim another top finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:01.28. Berry placed fourth in the 100 back (1:09.05), Smith took fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (6:38.40), and Fowler was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.03).
Bobcat times and placements in the 100 free were secured by Berry (fifth place, 56.74), Fowler (eighth, 59.45), Morrison (ninth, 1:01.60), Aspen Hataway (12th, 1:17.67) and Attebery (15th, 1:21.09).
In the 50 free, Smith was eighth (25.97) and followed by teammates Morrison (11th, 26.26), Hataway (26th, 30.39) and Attebery (30th, 32.51).
The Lady Cats’ best finish came in the 200 free relay where the quartet of Esther Bowman, Lillie Martin, Elizabeth Kucera and Taylor McCormick placed fourth in 2:12.06. Evan May, Martin, Bowman and McCormick were sixth in the 200 medley in 2:34.10.
The Cats’ B-team of Yana Jones, Addison Emond, Kucera and Alyson Guidry secured seventh in the 200 medley in 2:46.93. In the 200 free, the squad of Jones, Emond, May and Guidry placed eighth in 2:26.85.
Bowman landed in fifth in the 200 individual medley at 3:02.81. In the 100 back, Kucera finished fifth (1:28.09) and May was sixth (1:28.18). In the 100 breaststroke, Martin posted a time of 1:45.02 for ninth, and Emond claimed 11th (1:53.24).
McCormick placed sixth in the 100 free at 1:09.82 and was followed by Lady Cat teammates Bowman (seventh, 1:10.16) and Jones (13th, 1:19.31).
In the 50 free, GHS times and places belonged to McCormick (ninth, 31.66), Kucera (14th, 32.60), Jones (15th, 33.21), May (17th, 33.38), Martin (23rd, 36.35), Guidry (28th, 38.81) and Emond (34th, 41.78).
The state meet will be held this week, and GHS qualified in six events. Lykins, Fowler, Kucera and Berry qualified in the 400 free relay. Lykins, Smith, Kucera and Berry will swim in the 200 free relay.
Lykins achieved state qualifying times in the 50, 100, 200 free and 100 fly. Because swimmers are limited to the number of events at state, he will swim the 200 free and 100 fly.
The Georgia Tech Aquatic Center will host the state meet Wednesday through Saturday. A full meet schedule can be found at GHSA.net.
