The Gilmer Sport Hall of Fame will induct three new members in its latest class.
This year’s honorees include former athletes Joey Robinson (class of 2005) and Josh Hensley (2005). Also entering the hall of fame under the “support” category is longtime newspaperman Mark Millican.
While at GHS, Robinson participated in wrestling, track and field and football. Robinson was a three-time state finalist and followed up his runner-up placement as a sophomore with consecutive state titles at 130 pounds in ’04 and ’05. He was a team captain and posted a career record of 186-27. Robinson went on to compete with Team Georgia.
In track and field, he competed in the pole vault with a personal best mark of 11’ 6”. After graduation, he gave back to GHS assisting in coaching pole vault and with annual wrestling camps.
Hensley lettered in wrestling, football and tennis. He excelled in wrestling and was a three-time state placer. In 2003, he placed sixth and was a state runner-up the following year. He captured the 135-pound state title as a senior.
Hensley compiled a 152-49 record and served as team captain in ’04 and ’05. While at GHS, he was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, BETA Club and an honor roll student.
As a journalist at Ellijay’s Times-Courier, Millican covered Gilmer Sports for 20 years. He wrote hundreds of articles on GHS sports and stated that covering sports in North Georgia and especially at GHS has been one of the greatest thrills of his life.
Millican has been a member of multiple civic clubs and served in the United States Marine Corps and the Georgia Army National Guard. He is a man of Christian character who serves his God and his fellow man.
Friday’s induction ceremony will take place after the varsity girls game, which is scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m.
