The Gilmer Lady Cats were back on their home field for another flag football victory.
GHS hosted Dalton Academy and Fannin County last Thursday, and the former was up first.
While sustained drives and completions were hard to come by for Gilmer and Dalton Academy in the first half of the opening game, the Lady Cats struck quickly over the final two quarters.
The Cats’ defense forced four punts and three turnovers on downs on the day and GHS enjoyed a 14-0 win.
Fannin County was up next, and the seasoned Rebels took down the Lady Cats. All points were scored in the first half, and FCHS came out on top, 28-0.
It was a fruitless first half offensively for Gilmer and Dalton Academy. Incompletions and dropped passes stalled both offenses and the game was scoreless at halftime.
DA punted on its possession to begin the third quarter, and GHS responded with a one-play drive. Quarterback Mattie Jones tossed a quick pass to Jesse Wheeler and she flew down the sideline for a 33-yard touchdown.
GHS led 7-0 with 6:30 left in the third quarter. Both teams went on to turn the ball over on downs, and Gilmer’s third possession got underway at the Pumas’ 37. It took one play to reach pay dirt once again, and this time Jones connected with Wheeler down the seam for a touchdown.
Maggie Thompson caught her second 1-point conversion pass from Jones for a 14-0 lead with two minutes left in the game. Dalton Academy’s final two drives ended with a turnover on downs and a punt.
Against an established Fannin squad, GHS fell behind on the first play. An interception was returned for a touchdown for a 7-0 Rebel lead. FCHS added three more touchdowns in the second quarter for a 28-0 lead at the half.
Neither team breached the goal line over the third and fourth quarters, and the loss evened the Lady Cats’ overall record at 2-2.
Gilmer will make its way to Heritage today with games beginning at 5 p.m.
