It was a victorious night for Gilmer High volleyball at its final home matches of the regular season.
The GHS Lady Cats hosted region opponents West Hall and Pickens last Tuesday and earned wins by respective scores of 2-0 and 2-1.
“On this night, our last home matches, everyone played great together as a team, communicated on the court much better and seemed more focused on getting the win,” noted head coach Donna Parks. “I was very proud of both teams as they all came away with wins on the night.”
Gilmer disposed of West Hall without much trouble, 25-16 and 25-9.
GHS was aided by a strong game at the service line where it racked up 12 aces that were scored by Adrian Thompson and Anneliese Vaughn (four each), Taylor McCormick (two) and Brooke Wilson and Hali Hice (one apiece).
McCormick was the Cats’ kill leader with eight, and she was followed by Wilson (five), Thompson and Vaughn (two each) and Hice and Libby Pike (one). Vaughn led the way with eight assists and four digs, and Thompson provided five and three, respectively. Wilson also had three digs and Gracie Cain and McCormick both accounted for two.
Following Pickens’ 25-22 win to start the next match, GHS claimed the next two sets and the match, 25-18 and 15-9.
Thompson had a busy day with 10 kills, nine assists, four digs, three blocks and an ace. McCormick added five aces, five kills, seven digs, two assists and a block. Vaughn contributed 11 assists, six digs and three kills. Hice totaled four kills and three blocks, as both Pike and Wilson scored three kills.
Wilson’s defensive prowess led to 13 digs, and she was followed by Thompson and Caine (four), Hice and Pike (three) and Arifah Jones and Aliza Chastain (two).
The junior varsity Cats added two more wins to their season total by margins of 25-19 and 25-10 versus West Hall and 25-16 and 25-23 against Pickens.
The varsity Cats have a 6-20 overall record and will start the region tournament next Tuesday.
