Gilmer closed out its soccer season against one of the best teams in Class 3A.
The Lady Cats made their way to take on Wesleyan last Tuesday. The No. 4 ranked Wolves had plenty of firepower and were able to defeat the Cats, 9-0.
“Wesleyan was another very good team, and playing away on senior night was a tough task. Although we didn’t end with the result we wanted, the team gained valuable experience,” said head coach Adam Palmer.
Lady Cat goalkeeper Amayah Jones was there to stifle 15 Wesleyan shots, which allowed the game to go a full 80 minutes. Palmer noted that Gilmer had chances to score but could not cash in, and he also had praise for several players.
“Forwards Faith Goodwin, Yenifer Lopez and Sophia Lykins all created and had opportunities to score but were unable to finish,” he said. “Freshmen starters Salma Gonzalez-Santos and Gimena Domingo-Tercero have stepped into numerous roles on the team, and I’m very proud of their growth and progress. I am very excited for the preparation for next season to begin.”
GHS finished with a 5-6-1 record and was 1-5 versus region opponents. Region 7-3A has had plenty of girls talent in recent years across all sports, and this year followed that trend. In addition to Wesleyan, the trio of Lumpkin, White and Dawson counties are all ranked in the top 10.
“Looking back on the season, I have seen the culture shift positively toward growth and accountability,” said Palmer. “I’ve stressed the importance of capitalizing on what we can control. Fitness and strength are at the top of that list. The team has realized that we must be stronger, faster and have a better first touch on the ball.
“Committing to the offseason work by running, spending time in the weight room and simply playing more will produce results. This we absolutely can control, and I expect the players to commit to this charge moving ahead. Although our region is very strong, our young team will continue to do the work necessary to improve.”
GHS graduates just one player off this year’s team. All 11 starters return and offensive leaders Goodwin, Lykins and Lopez are currently sophomores.
Palmer hopes to see the program continue to grow, noting, “I am most encouraged by the support of parents and spectators at our games. Coaches and players alike are happy to see the numbers in the stands supporting the teams. I intend to continue to work with the team to build and create a culture and game atmosphere the Gilmer community is excited and proud of.”
