Gilmer High volleyball hit the road for a region win.
The GHS Lady Cats were in West Hall last Tuesday, and they came away with a 2-0 win over the host Spartans. Gilmer also faced Wesleyan, and the Wolves won in two sets.
GHS traveled to Dalton two days later to meet Christian Heritage. The Cats battled in three close sets but fell to the Lions, 2-1.
Gilmer’s wins over West Hall were to the tune of 25-23 and 25-18. GHS had a strong hitting presence with Taylor McCormick’s seven kills as both Brooke Wilson and Adrian Thompson had five apiece and Anneliese Vaughn finished with three.
Setters Vaughn and Thompson were there to set up GHS points when not scoring on their own and both had eight assists. Digs were tallied by Vaughn (six), Wilson (five), McCormick and Thompson (four each), Arifah Jones (three), Gracie Cain (two) and Libby Pike (one).
Wesleyan secured the match with wins of 25-14 and 25-10. McCormick and Wilson were the kill leaders once again with four and three, respectively. Vaughn dished eight assists and Thompson had four. Wilson led the way with 10 digs and Vaughn tallied nine.
“Although we lost to Wesleyan, you can tell the girls are working so well together,” head coach Donna Parks said. “They are becoming more confident in themselves, as well as their teammates. Each day I see improvements.”
After dropping the opening set to Christian Heritage, 25-20, the Cats rebounded to take the second set, 27-25. The Lions cemented their win with a third set win of 15-12.
Stat leaders included Vaughn and McCormick with four and three aces, respectively. McCormick added 11 kills while Vaughn provided 13 assists and Thompson totaled 12. Dig leaders included Wilson (15), Vaughn (nine) and Thompson (seven).
GHS traveled to Southeast Whitfield last Saturday for the Raider Rally. The Cats dropped matches to LaFayette (25-15, 25-14), Calhoun (25-22, 25-17), Dalton (25-22, 25-18) and Southeast (25-23, 25-23). Gilmer has a 4-20 overall record.
The junior varsity Cats topped West Hall (25-21, 25-16) but lost to Wesleyan (25-17, 25-13) and Christian Heritage (25-16, 26-24).
