Gilmer track and field athletes had an action-packed week with three meets.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats were at home last Tuesday, and the former finished first at the four-team event. The Lady Cats placed second on the girls side.
In running events, Bobcat Jeremy Martinez clocked the fastest time in the 3,200-meter run (11:33.46) and was the runner-up in the 1,600 (5:17.05). Braxtyn Newberry finished first as well in the 300-meter hurdles (50.02). He was third in the 110-meter hurdles at 21.30.
Leeland Dantin placed second in the 100-meter dash (11.54), Nate Wiseley secured the same position in the 200-meter dash (25.15). Seth Turner took second in the 800 meters (2:18.88), and Jeremiah Few finished second in the 110 hurdles (20.62).
Third-place finishers included Wiseley in the 100 (12.08) and Turner in the mile (5:32.12).
The relay teams also had strong performances, taking first in the 4x100 (46.48) and 4x800 (9:47.59).
In field events, Dawson Richard earned a first-place finish in discus (123’ 5”), and Coleman Phillips was second (113’ 10”). Cole Wollard took first in shot put (35’ 10”), Kevin Olea was the runner-up (32’ 6”) and Chaz Curtis placed third (32’ 2”).
Wiseley finished second in the high jump (5’ 6”). Few secured third in the triple jump (33’ 10”).
For the Lady Cats, Lauren Smith won the 800 meters (2:49.61). Jennifer Garcia finished first in both the 1,600 (5:58.46) and 3,200 (12:23.33). Ella Schwartz added a third-place finish in the 1,600 metes (6:18.83). The relay team took first in the 4x800 (11:25.74).
Lilyan Cook led the way with a first-place finish in discus (103’ 1”) and claimed second in shot put (31’ 5”). Morgan Palmieri placed second in the long jump (14’ 1/2”).
The Bobcats racked up 59 points for first ahead of Adairsville (45), Fideles Christian (21) and Lumpkin County (13). Fideles (60) was the top girls team, followed by Gilmer (32), Adairsville (26) and Lumpkin (11).
The Cats were in Union County Thursday for the Mountain Top Invitational.
Lady Cat Garcia was third in the 3,200 (12:23.91). The 4x800 relay team also earned a third-place finish (11:08.89).
Cook’s toss in the discus (110’ 5”) secured second, and she was third in the shot put (31’).
Dantin was the fastest in the 200 meters (23.07) and third in the 100 (11.58). Martinez recorded a trio of third-place finishes in the 800 (2:16.83), 1,600 (5:03.69) and 3,200 (11:58.87). The 4x800 relay team also earned a second-place finish (9:07.06). Richard picked up a third-place finish in the discus (122-3).
The host Panthers (151) were tops in the boys standings, followed by Dawson County (101), White County (75), Gilmer (72), Rabun County (62) and Pickens (60).
Union was the No. 1 girls team over White, 144-142. Dawson (104) was third, and Pickens (68), Gilmer (29) and Rabun (16) followed.
GHS wrapped up the week Saturday in Dalton at the 26th annual Ronnie McClurg Invitational. Both the Bobcats and Lady Cats finished 12th in their respective standings at the 20-team meet.
Garcia was fourth in the 3,200 (12:27.48) and eighth in the 1,600 (5:50.86). The 4x800 relay team added a sixth-place finish (11:26.14).
Cook was the best in the discus (106’ 5”) once again and took third in the shot put (33’ 4”).
The Bobcats’ 4x100 relay team took seventh (45.48). Wiseley added a sixth-place finish in the 200 (24.06).
Cheyne Smith earned a third-place medal in the pole vault (11’). Richard was sixth in the discus (121’ 9”).
Allatoona (135), Kell (94) and Kennesaw Mountain (74.5) were the top three boys teams. For the girls, Heritage (90.5), Allatoona (87) and Model (64.5) were the best on the day.
