Gilmer High was in Cleveland for the Mount Yonah Invitational.
The annual track and field meet was last Friday at White County High School, and nine teams competed. The GHS Lady Cats (18 points) placed eighth in their standings, while the Bobcats (23.5) finished ninth on the boys side.
Lady Cat freshman Lilyan Cook continued to dominate in the discus. She finished first once again, and this time her winning toss measured 104’ 5 1/2”. A top-eight placement was needed to score team points, and teammate Kenzie Sewell did so in the high jump with a fourth-place mark of 4’ 6”.
The Cats scored in three running events, and all were for eighth place. In the 400 meters, Aliza Chastain finished in 1:10.56, and Dulce Mares posted a time of 1:01 in the 300-meter hurdles. Liz Gonzalez, Madison Hall, Sophia Riblet and Stephanie Velasco finished the 4x800 relay in 12:05.10.
The Bobcats secured points in the pole vault with a runner-up and fifth-place finish by John Keener clear (11’ 6”) and Aspen Hataway (11’), respectively. Michael Little also scored points in the 800 meters with an eighth-place time of 56.13.
Gilmer’s remaining points came in relays. The 4x400 team of James Beach, Leeland Dantin, Keener and Little secured the best placement in fourth (3:50.26). The 4x200 team took seventh (1:39.98) and swapped Keener for Dylan Pospisil.
Edward Marietta, Seth Turner, Lucas Watson and Sean Rock were on the track for the 4x800 and finished seventh (10:14.51). In the 4x100, Douglass Callihan, Hunter Britain, Bo Cronic and Matthew Grice placed eighth (46.91).
Hart County (123 points) was the No. 1 boys team ahead of Union County (116.5) and Habersham Central (92). North Hall clipped Union for first in the girls standings, 156-146, and Hart (91) was third.
