Gilmer High track received a final tune up ahead of the region meet.
The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats hosted Pickens and Fidelis Christian School for senior night last Tuesday. The Bobcats came away with six first-place finishes on the day, and topped Pickens for first, 73-60, while Fidelis scored 45 points.
The Lady Cats claimed a pair of first-place medals and were second behind Pickens, 60-51. Fidelis’ girls matched their boys score with 45.
The Bobcats won four of six field events, and Dominic Tarantino led the way in the triple jump (39’) and discus (114’ 6”). Hunter Watkins’ mark of 18’ 8” in the long jump and Will Kiker’s pole vault of 11’ 6’’ also added valuable first-place points.
For the Lady Cats, Taylor McCormick’s leap of 29’ 11” in the triple jump was tops, and Reagan Boling’s time of 1:06.31 in the 400-meter run cemented their top finish in running events.
Watkins also won the 100-meter dash in 11.47, and Issac Rellinger’s time of 25.10 in the 200 meters secured the Bobcats’ remaining top placement.
The Bobcats finished second on four occasions in field events. Tarantino was a runner-up in the long jump (18’ 5”), as were Issac Freeman (high jump, 5’ 10”), Aspen Hataway (pole vault, 11’) and Luke Bryant (discus, 112’ 9”).
The Lady Cats four runners-up included McCormick (high jump, 5’ 2”), Boling (long jump, 15’ 1”), Kayleigh Robbins (triple jump, 26’ 6”) and Jocelyn Birko (shot put, 30’ 1”).
In running events, the Bobcats snagged five second-place times with Carson Purvis in the 800 meters (2:22.71) and Zachary Bobak in the 3,200 (11:44.14). GHS was second in the 4x100 (48.17), 4x400 (3:51.85) and 4x800 (9:59.44) relays.
The Lady Cats’ 4x100 relay team (54.58) was second along with Amayah Jones (100, 13.88), Kenzie Sewell (200, 28.51), Madison Stanley (3,200, 14:49.32) and Birko (100 hurdles, 19.66).
The Bobcats and Lady Cats combined for 11 third-place finishes. For the boys, that included Andrew Mooney (triple jump, 37’ 7” and 300 hurdles, 49.60), Bryant (shot, 33’ 8”), John Keener (400, 57.77), Purvis (1,600, 4:56.24) and Kendall Sanders (110 hurdles, 19.31).
Placing third for the Lady Cats were Kaitlyn Grice (discus, 82’ 9”), Sewell (100, 13.94), Josephine Royer (400, 1:09.24) and McCormick (300 hurdles, 58.16) and 4x400 relay (4:52.97).
GHS will make its way to Cherokee Bluff Thursday and Friday for the Region 7-3A meet for the first stage of the state qualifying process.
