Gilmer High turned in a successful week on the tennis court.
The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats were on the court for two region matches, and the Ridgeland Panthers were in town last Monday. The Lady Cats won 4-1, and the Bobcats claimed their team win, 3-2.
Gilmer traveled to LaFayette three days later, and this time the Lady Cats won 3-2 while the Bobcats disposed of the Ramblers, 4-1.
The Lady Cats swept the Panthers on the singles court with two-set victories by No.1 Lyla Engle (7-6, 6-0) and No. 3 Katelyn Campbell (6-2, 6-3). No. 2 single Madison Bradshaw rebounded from a first set loss (6-4) to win the next two and the match, 6-2 and 6-3.
Bree Burnette and Chelsey Griggs teamed up on the No. 1 doubles court and took both sets, 6-3. The No. 2 GHS team of Autumn Spangler and Rosalie Ballew were defeated 6-1, 6-1.
The Bobcats secured their win over Ridgeland on the single’s court.
GHS ended up winning the match by taking six straight sets from their Panther opponents. While No. 1 single Eder Martinez did drop the first set (6-4) he won the next two, 6-3, 6-2.
Bobcats Alex Miltiades and Chase Little won in commanding fashion. In the No. 2 singles match, Miltiades won 6-1, 6-2. No. 3 Little came out on top, 6-0, 6-1.
The Panthers notched wins over GHS doubles David Warren and Bo Cronic (7-4 TB, 6-3) and Aiden McCart and Charles Addie (6-4, 6-3).
At LaFayette, single wins were earned by Miltiades (6-1, 6-3) and Little (6-4, 6-3). Doubles Cronic and Warren locked down the team win 6-0, 7-5.
Bradshaw’s 7-3 first set tiebreaker was followed by a commanding 6-1 win in set two. Campbell’s match required a first-set tiebreaker as well, which she won, 7-4. She rolled to a 6-1 second-set victory.
Burnette and Griggs dropped their first set 6-1 but bounced back for wins of 6-3 and 6-0.
GHS hosted Heritage Monday for senior night and the Bobcats and Lady Cats both lost and now have 2-7 and 3-6 records on the season, respectively. Gilmer traveled to Calhoun at press deadline.
