Gilmer High tennis met top seeded Oconee County to start the state tennis tournament.
The No. 4 seeded GHS Lady Cats made the trip to take on the Warriors last Wednesday, and they returned home with a 5-0 defeat.
The Warriors, who are ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A, only lost three games on the day. No. 1 GHS single Ollie Burnett lost her match, 6-1, 6-1, and Lyla Engle fell 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.
No. 3 single Lyric Lowman, as well as the doubles teams of Lucy Ray and Madison Bradshaw and Chelsey Griggs and Bree Burnette, were all defeated, 6-0, 6-0.
“I was very impressed with the way the girls worked during the season in order to secure their spot as a state qualifier,” said coach Donna Parks. “Most of the girls had very limited experience, so it just goes to show that hard work at practice can lead to good things. I am very proud of them.”
The Cats ended the season with a 5-8 overall record.
