Gilmer High swimmers were back in Calhoun for their latest weekly meet.
GHS squared off against five other teams last Thursday at the Calhoun Aquatic Center, and the event gave swimmers another opportunity to improve times and qualify for state.
The Bobcats finished third with 233.5 points behind first-place Calhoun (527) and runner-up River Ridge (430.5). The Lady Cats landed in fifth in the girls standings and topped out at 162. River Ridge won over Calhoun, 498-365, and Pickens (275) rounded out the top three.
Relays continued to be a strength for the Bobcats, who had a pair of third-place finishes. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Law Lykins, Cheyne Smith, Ian Berry and Jacob Kucera turned in a time of 1:39.24. Lykins, Larz Fowler, Berry and Kucera swam the 400 freestyle relay in 3:50.41.
Gilmer also had a second team in the 400 free that included Smith, Tanner Attebery, Aspen Hataway and Hayden Morrison, who placed seventh in 4:51.35.
Lykins, Berry and Fowler each secured a pair of top-10 placements in individual events. Lykins was third in the 100-yard butterfly (58.21) and seventh in the 100 free (59.92), while Berry finished fourth in the 200 free (2:19.70) and ninth in the 50 free (25.99). Fowler placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:20.66) and eighth in the 100 free (1:01.51)
Kucera took fourth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:28.59 and was 24th in the 50 free (30.51). Smith placed ninth in the 100 breast (1:24.53) and Morrison finished in the same position in the 100 free (1:03.39).
Five more Bobcats swam the 50 free and included Morrison (16th, 28.69), Maaca Teeranangsu (25th, 31.00), Hataway (28th, 31.85), Attebery (29th, 31.94) and Michael Sexton (30th, 32.25).
Remaining times and placements in the 100 free included Teeranangsu (16th, 1:13.05), Sexton (20th, 1:18.53), Attebery (21st, 1:18.74) and Hataway (23rd, 1:19.35).
The Lady Cat quartet of Esther Bowman, Yana Jones, Evan May and Elizabeth Kucera clocked in at 5:15.98 for sixth place in the 400 free relay. Jones, May, Alyson Guidry and Taylor McCormick were seventh in the 200 free relay at 2:19.77.
May, Bowman, Kucea and McCormick also joined forces in the 200 medley relay for eighth in 2:35.02.
Bowman led the way in individual events and turned in a pair of sixth place times in the 500 free (7:23.41) and 100 breast (1:34.22). McCormick scored valuable team points in the 100 free (seventh, 2:19.77) and 50 free (13th, 30.95).
Also swimming the 50 free were May (17th, 33.44), Kucera (18th, 33.88), Jones (22nd, 35.31) and Guidry (23rd, 37.66). In the 100 back, Kucera and May finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in 1:26.05 and 1:29.69. Jones completed the 100 free for 12th in 1:26.31.
GHS attended the Tiger Plunge in Adairsville Saturday and Lykins qualified for state in the 50 free and 100 butterfly. A full recap of the meet will appear in next week’s Times-Courier.
