Twenty-five teams flocked to the Ellijay for the Gilmer Girls Bobcat Bash.
The inaugural wrestling event took place last Saturday, and Carrollton came away with first place over Gilmer, 162-146. Gainesville (130) rounded out the top three in the standings.
A round robin format was used in the opening rounds as wrestlers were separated into three pools. Participants were then seeded in brackets, and Gilmer came away with two champions and a pair of runners-up. Three GHS grapplers took third and one finished fourth to wrap up Gilmer’s point scorers at the event.
Gilmer’s first champion was crowned at 135 pounds where Abelinda Tercero posted a 5-0 record. She took first with a 11-2 major against Cedartown’s Rylynn Bridges. Andrea Garcia (145) was 5-0 as well and claimed her title with a 4-0 decision over Kylee Bingham of Hiram.
Josephine Royer (105) and Linda Tercero (155) were Gilmer’s runners-up. Royer pinned her way to the finals, and none of her first four matches went beyond the second round. She lost by the same fashion to White County’s Ollie Weiland in the finals.
Tercero’s day mirrored Royer’s in that she pinned her first four foes. In the finals, Joyce Byers of Madison County secured a pin for first.
Leticia Tercero (130) placed third and her day started with three pins. She lost her fourth match and secured her placement with a decision. Amayah Jones (170) pinned her first three opponents as well. After her defeat, she earned a decision for third.
Gilmer’s remaining third-place finish belonged to Carmelina Tercero (190). She followed the same pattern with three pins. She rebounded from her loss with a second-period pin.
Salma Gonzalez (100) was fourth and finished with a 2-3 record. Placing fifth were Gilmer’s Felisha Yarborough (135, 2-3 record), Emma Cagle (145, 1-4) and Maria Raymundo (155, 3-2).
Landing in sixth place were Juana Tercero (100, 0-5) and Erica Velasquez (125, 1-4), while Margarita Lucas-Bautista (140, 1-4) and Lucinda McArthur (190 1-4) finished eighth. Magdalene Thompson (105), Leydi Garcia-Lopez (155) and Morgan Ford (170) also took the mat for Gilmer at the tournament.
