The Gilmer Lady Cats ended the regular season with a lopsided road victory.
The Cats met region foe West Hall last Tuesday as the end to the woeful Spartans’ season nears. WHHS has struggled all year, and Gilmer had little standing in its way. West Hall made just two shots from the field and was behind by 30 points at the half.
Gilmer’s lead grew in the third and fourth quarters, and the Cats notched a 55-10 victory.
The Lady Cats only shot 28 percent from the field, but that was offset by their 31 offensive rebounds, which led to 20 second-chance points. Of course, ball security was an issue for the Spartans all evening, and they committed 29 turnovers. Thirteen were the result of GHS steals, and the Cats racked up 31 points off those turnovers.
Gilmer followed up its eight-point first quarter with 24 in the second. GHS made four of its eight three pointers ahead of the half to open a 32-2 advantage.
Not much changed in the third as WHHS continued to miss the shots it was able to take while Gilmer pushed its lead to 44. The fourth quarter was shortened, and Gilmer earned its third region victory.
Bree Burnette was the Cats’ top scorer with 13 points, Aliza Chastain added 11 and Lucy Ray finished with nine. Chelsey Griggs pulled down 14 rebounds, which included 10 on the offensive end to go with eight points.
The Cats finished the regular season with an 8-15 record and secured the No. 6 seed headed into the region tournament, which began at press deadline versus No. 3 seed Dawson County.
