The Gilmer Lady Cats dropped both of their region softball matchups.
The Cats were in Jasper last Monday to take on rival Pickens. While the Dragonettes only managed four hits, costly GHS errors led to four unearned runs. GHS played from behind all game and lost, 6-2.
Gilmer was on the road at Wesleyan the following day. The Wolves’ three-run fifth inning allowed them to end the game early for an 8-0 win.
Pickens scored all of its runs through three innings. The Dragonettes’ initial run in the first inning was because of a Lady Cat error. In the second, a leadoff walk and two-run homer to center moved PHS ahead by three.
Gilmer responded in its next at-bat. Lily Fortune smacked a one-out double to right and advanced to third on Emily Dale’s base hit to left. Fortune dashed home on a wild pitch.
A leadoff walk and ensuing error saw the Dragonette hitter race all the way around the bases in their half of the third. Two more hits added Pickens’ sixth run.
Jaylee McDaniel got the sixth inning rolling for GHS with a double to center. Gracie Gaitanoglou drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive, and McDaniel and courtesy runner Mia Henson scored on A.J. Allen’s double to left.
Trailing 6-3, GHS was retired in order in the seventh. Fortune tossed six innings and allowed four hits and three walks while striking out six.
McDaniel collected two hits, and Emma Cagle was there for one when the Cats met Wesleyan.
The Wolves had seven hits on the day, which included a home run and three more for extra bases. Following their one-run first inning, the Wolves added four runs in the third and three more in the fifth.
The Cats committed two errors, and three of Wesleyan’s runs were unearned. Fortune pitched 4 1/3 innings, struck out three and walked one.
