Gilmer High School cheerleaders continued their competitive season in Canton.
GHS made its way to Creekview High School last Saturday and faced some stiff competition. Defending state champions Savannah Christian was in Gilmer’s division and finished first. GHS scored a 60 on its routine to land in fourth place.
Head coach Naomi Esparza discussed Gilmer’s approach to competitions this season and noted where cheerleaders excelled.
“I think we had some improvement, and that’s what we strive for,” she said. “I always tell the girls we want progress over perfection. We’re focused on celebrating the highlights of where we had some improvement.
“Most notably, we had huge increases in jumps, cheer and dance. From our first competition to the second, it went up about five points and we were pleased with that. Our tumbling and stunting came up a few points, so we’re inching closer to where we’d like to be. We’d like to be scoring a lot higher, but if we’re making those improvements, we’re hoping to be where we need to be by region.”
Gilmer High cheerleaders will head to Cherokee High School Saturday, and they are set to perform at 11 a.m.
