Gilmer High faced its Hwy. 515 rivals on the baseball diamond.
The GHS Bobcats were at Pickens last Monday to continue their nonregion schedule, and the Dragons only needed five innings for a 10-0 win.
Gilmer hosted Fannin County the following day, and the Cats’ five-run second led to a 7-2 victory. GHS made the trip to Fannin Friday and were not as fortunate this time around and lost, 6-0.
Gilmer’s defensive miscues led to four unearned runs for Pickens, while the Cats were limited to one hit offensively.
PHS led 2-0 after the first and 5-0 following its second-inning at-bat. The Dragons added another run in the third, and their lone scoreless inning came in the fourth. A walk followed by three straight singles and a double plated four runs in the fifth to end the game.
Mel Mosley accounted for Gilmer’s only hit of the day. GHS pitching: Haden West 2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 BB. Kanyon Connel 2 H. C.J. Hatchett 2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 K, 1 BB.
Hayden Berry’s six-inning pitching performance limited Fannin to four hits, and he struck out six and walked three. Both of Fannin’s runs were earned, and the Rebels scored a run in both the first and third innings.
The Bobcats’ offense was quick to get going as well. Peyton Chancey’s two-out infield hit scored Blake Grizzle, who led off the inning with a single to right field.
In the second, Gilmer added five more runs to its total. West walked, Hatchett singled and Grizzle was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eli Cooper flew out to center to move GHS ahead, 2-1. Noah Gutillo’s ensuing single to center scored two more.
Berry’s and Chancey’s base hits to center each plated a run to give GHS a 6-1 advantage. Gilmer added an insurance run in the sixth when Grizzle scooted home on a passed ball.
Chancey and Gutillo both had two hits on the day and drove in two runs. Grizzle had two hits as well and Cooper Cochran, Hatchett and Berry all had one.
Cochran took over for Berry in the seventh with two runners on base and no outs. However, three outs followed to hold Fannin off the scoreboard.
Fannin held GHS to two hits in the rematch, and the Bobcats struck out 13 times.
Four GHS errors led to just one of the Rebels’ six runs being earned. FCHS scored three runs in the first and added a run in each of the next three innings.
Mosley and Chancey both had a hit on the day for Gilmer. GHS pitching: Landon McClure 3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 3 BB. Hatchett 3 IP, 2 H, 4K, 2 BB.
Gilmer is 3-4 overall and begins its region schedule this week. The Bobcats faced Heritage for game one at press deadline and will host the Generals Friday for a double header starting at 5:30 p.m.
