Gilmer High cross-country runners closed out their season.
GHS was in Helen last Thursday for the Region 7-3A Championships at Unicoi State Park. The Bobcats and Lady Cats each placed sixth in their respective team standings.
The top five times counted toward the team score. Michael Little was the No. 1 Bobcat at the race, and he placed 27th in 19:24.5. Teammates Dawson Richard (30th) and Talyn Mesner (32nd) also clocked in at under 20 minutes with respective times of 19:34.1 and 19:40.3.
Leeland Dantin finished at 20:02.5 for 34th, and teammate Eder Martinez was next (20:09) in 36th. Seth Turner (37th, 20:24.7) and Hannes Sobottka (45th, 21:17.7) also completed the course.
Leading the way for the Lady Cats was Estephany Becerra. She placed 30th with a time of 24:39.5. The next Gilmer runners finished closely in 32nd and 33rd place and were Salma Gonzalez (25:16.1) and Florinda Lopez (24:16.8).
Maria Alonzo (37th, 25:31.9) and Maria Raymundo (42nd, 27:37.3) rounded out the Lady Cats’ point scorers. Selina Tercero (43rd, 29:06.4) and Angelica Lopez (44th, 30:43.2) were the remaining Gilmer runners to cross the finish line.
Wesleyan’s Weezie Moore won the girls 5K in 20:01.4. The Wolves claimed four of the next five finishes to win the region title by a wide margin over second-place Dawson County, 17-66. Next in the standing were White County (94), Lumpkin County (94), Pickens (96) and GHS (168).
Wood Moore of Wesleyan won the boys race in 15:57.4. Lumpkin slipped past Wesleyan for the region title, 36-37. Third-place Dawson (57) was followed by White (110), Pickens (112) and Gilmer (159).
