Gilmer High School swam against some of the top teams in the area at the Northwest Georgia Championships.
The annual meet was held at Calhoun High School last Saturday and 20 teams made the trip. The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats competed in 10 events.
Gilmer swam in the preliminaries, and Cheyne Smith finished 12th in the 100-yard freestyle at 56.60, while he clocked in at 1:21.17 in the 100-yard breaststroke for 17th.
Jacob Kucera was 26th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:17.72), while Clifford Defoor finished 86th in the 100 free (1:40.69) and 118th in the 50 free (41.04).
In the 200-yard medley relay, Lady Cats Evan May, Yana Jones, Lana Ginger and Rosalie Ballew were 23rd in 3:19.91. May also finished 18th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:24.06), while Gilmer’s remaining times and placements came in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
In the 50, Gilmer’s finishes were secured by May (27th, 31.86), Jones (58th, 37.52), Ginger (73rd, 40.98) and Ballew (91st, 56.04). In the 100, Kucera (23rd, 1:12.64) was followed by Jones (41st, 1:24.84), Ginger (61st, 1:40.93) and Ballew (64th, 2:08.13).
