Track and field travels to Forsyth Co.
Gilmer High track and field was up early Saturday for the Forsyth Central Bulldog Invitational.
It was Gilmer’s first invitational of the season after the Bobcats and Lady Cats faced Fannin County two weeks prior. GHS was one of six teams in attendance, and the Bobcats placed fourth with 75 points. The Lady Cats finished fifth and ended the day with 56 points.
The Bobcats racked up 19 placements on the day that were high enough to score team points. The Lady Cats achieved 13 such finishes on their side. None were better than Taylor McCormick in the high jump, and she cleared 5’ 2” for first.
Leading the way for the Bobcats were runners-up Isaac Freeman in the high jump (5’ 6”) and Will Kiker in the pole vault (11’). A quartet of Bobcats placed third, and included Carson Purvis in the 1,600 meters (4:43.24), Dominic Tarantino in the high jump (5’ 6”), Aspen Hataway in the pole vault (11’) and Luke Bryant in the discus throw (98’ 6”).
Fourth place finishers included Purvis (800 meters, 2:08.67), Zach Bobak (3,200, 11:44.35), Bryant (shot put, 33’ 2 1/2”) and Tarantino (triple jump, 32’ 2 3/4”) and (discus, 98’ 5 1/2”).
Tarantino also placed sixth in the long jump (17’ 7 1/2”). Brock Titus secured the same position in the shot put at 31’ 5 3/4”, and John Keener landed in sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (20.25).
Kenzie Sewell placed third for the Lady Cats in the 100 meters (14.08) and high jump (4’ 8”), and was fourth in the 200 meters (28.95). Madison Stanley was third in the 3,200 meters (14:00.84). McCormick took third as well in the triple jump (30’) and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (1:03.64).
Finishing fifth were Josephine Royer (400, 1:08.56) and Kayleigh Robbins (triple jump, 27’ 7 1/2”). Reagan Boling was fifth in the long jump (12’ 10 1/2”) and sixth in the 400 meters (1:09.74).
Two Lady Cat relay squads also scored team points. Royer, Boling, Amayah Jones and Sewell finished second in the 4x100 (56.86). They swapped Sophia Lykins for Jones in the 4x400 and placed fourth (4:56.08).
Four Bobcat relay teams secured team points. Bobak, Michael Little, Talyn Mesner and Keener were fourth in the 4x800 (9:24.06). The team of Will Capstick, Matthew Grice, Kyle Cowart and Issac Rellinger were fourth in the 4x200 (1:41.99).
Michael Little, Hunter Watkins, Drew Little and Kiker placed fifth in the 4x100 (48.11), and the team of Andrew Mooney, Purvis, Christian Sumner and Little claimed the same spot in the 4x400 at 3:52.48.
GHS hosted a quad meet at press deadline and will travel to Creekview High School Saturday.
