Gilmer High School girls received plenty of quality mat time at their second wrestling event of the season.
GHS traveled to Campbell High School last Saturday for the 24-team Lady Spartan Round Robin.
Fifteen Gilmer wrestlers were in attendance, and they all took the mat for at least four matches. Head coach Stacy Galloway noted each weight class contained eight to 10 wrestlers. They were split into pools of two, crossover matches decided placements and GHS had three champions.
“Everyone wrestled great, and even in losses we were doing some good things,” Galloway said.
Gilmer’s champions included Leticia Tercero (4-0 record), Juana Tercero (4-1) and Andrea Garcia (5-0). Also reaching the finals and placing second were Abelinda Tercero (3-1), Amayah Jones (3-1), Salma Gonzalez (4-1) and Emma Cagle (4-1).
In third were Felisha Yarborough (3-1), Linda Tercero (3-1), Carmelina Tercero (3-1), Magdalene Thompson (2-2), Margarita Lucas (2-2) and Morgan Ford (3-2). Fifth-place finishers included Allie Mayo (3-1) and Lucy Ann McArthur (1-4).
“I was very pleased with how we did as a team,” said Galloway. “We saw a few things from some other teams that we need to work on defending a little better, and we just have to keep working hard at improving on the things we do. While they didn’t keep a team score, we did lead the tournament in most pins (36) and most match points (212). To have 36 pins out of the 47 matches we won is pretty impressive.
“I am so very proud of these girls. They are working hard, and they are seeing the results. I tell them all the time that the goal is to get better every week, and so far they are all doing that.”
