Gilmer High track was in Cleveland for its latest event.
The annual Mt. Yonah Invitational drew eight teams last Saturday, and the GHS Bobcats topped out at 55 points for sixth place. The Lady Cats’ day ended with 45 points for eighth in the girls standings.
A top-eight finish was needed in most events to accrue team points. Taylor McCormick was Gilmer’s No. 1 performer on the day. She continued to outleap her opposition in the high jump and cleared 5’ 4” for first place. She was also seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at 56.84.
Amayah Jones became the Cats’ next highest placer when she clocked in at 13.53 in the 100-meter dash for third. She claimed sixth in the 200 meters at 28.59 and took seventh in the shot put (29’ 10”).
Jayla Walker completed the 3,200-meter run in 15:18.18 for seventh, and Josephine Royer was eighth in the 400 meters (1:08.70). Kenzie Sewell finished eighth in the 100 meters at 13.78.
Aspen Hataway nabbed second in the pole vault (12’) for the Bobcats, while teammate Matthew Grice placed third (10’ 6”). Kendall Sanders’ time of 44.59 in the 300 hurdles was good enough for fourth.
Will Kiker took third in both the shot put (44’ 9 1/2”) and long jump (19’ 6”). His heave of 125’ 7 1/2” in the discus scored fifth-place points.
GHS had two eighth-place finishers and included James Beach in the 400 meters (55.90) and Talyn Mesner in the 3,200 meters (11:35.88).
GHS scored team points in each relay. For the Lady Cats, the 4x400 team of Nora Dorsey, Kayleigh Robbins, McCormick and Kaitlyn Howard were third (5:01.04). Royer, Abbie Elliott, Sewell and Robbins finished the 4x200 in 1:58.17 for fourth.
In the 4x800, Esther Bowman, Liz Gonzalez, Walker and Maria Raymundo claimed fifth in 13:44.72. Jones, Royer, Elliott and Sewell teamed up for seventh in the 4x100 (57.42).
The Bobcats’ best relay was the 4x800 where Michael Little, John Keener, Charles Norman and Leeland Dantin placed fourth in 9:25.63. In the 4x400, they swapped Norman for Christian Sumner, and they finished in 3:43.87 for fifth.
Little, Grice, Beach and Dylan Pospisil ended the 4x100 relay in 49.05 for seventh. The 4x200 team of Little, Grice and Beach took eighth in 1:42.97.
GHS will host Union County and Fideles Christian School April 11 for a 4 p.m. meet.
