Gilmer High was off and running in Gainesville to begin the track and field season.
The Bobcats and the Lady Cats combined to score points on 26 occasions, which included four first-place finishes.
GHS shined in the shot and took first in the boys and girls divisions. Douglas Callihan (42’ 5”) and Amayah Jones (35’ 8”) led the way for Gilmer.
A pair of Lady Cats earned runner-up finishes and included Lilyan Cook (shot put, 33’ 1”), Kenzie Sewell (high jump, 4’ 6”). Bobcat Dawson Richard was second in the discus with a throw of 110’ 4”, and Coleman Phillips was fifth (97’ 6”).
Lady Cat Presley Chancey’s triple jump of 29’ 9” allowed her to claim third, and Jace Sanderson secured the same placement in the high jump (4’ 4”). Maddy Patterson’s mark of 76’ 9” was good enough for fifth in the discus.
When it came to running events, the Bobcats locked up two more top placements. Richard won the 800-meter run in 2:14.47. Jeremy Martinez clocked in at 12:08.22 for first in the 3,200 meters.
Seth Turner took third in the 800 at 2:25.63 and was fourth in the 400 in 57.96
Gilmer’s fifth-place finishers included Max New (800, 2:30.52) and (1,600, 5:18.28), Leeland Dantin (200, 24.96) and (400, 58.01) and Callihan (100, 12.34).
Jones finished the 100 in 13.78 for second place, which was one of the Lady Cats’ best placements in running events. She also took fourth in the 200 at 39.06.
Jennifer Garcia’s time of 14:33.32 in the 3,200 secured second place as well. Sanderson claimed third in the 800 (2:42.29), and Morgan Palmeri finished fourth in the 1,600 (6:39.69).
Finishing fifth were Garcia (1,600, 6:40.80), Isabella Evans (200, 29.26) and Sofia El Khorchi (400, 1:07.90).
Chestatee was the top girls team with 103 points followed by White County (57), Gilmer (48) and West Hall (24). Chestatee clipped White County for first on the boys side, 80-71. West Hall (44) and GHS (35) rounded out the standings.
The Bobcats and Lady Cats hosted a trimeet versus Pickens and Murray County at Tuesday’s press deadline.
