Gilmer opened its track and field season at home.
The GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats hosted Dawson County, Union County, Cherokee and Pickens last Thursday. The Bobcats racked up 66 team points for third, while the Lady Cats secured the same position in the girls standings with 33 points.
In the field events, Bobcat Cheyne Smith won the pole vault with a personal best height of 11’ 0”. Dawson Richard led the way in the discus with a throw of 128’ 11” and also finished sixth in the shot put with a mark of 34’ 5”.
Nate Wiseley finished fourth in the high jump at 5’ 4”. Jeremiah Few placed fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 32’ 4”. Uriah Doss was sixth in the discus at 97’ 10”. In the shot put, Chaz Curtis took seventh with a throw of 34’ 4” and Cole Wollard placed 10th at 33’ 2”.
Leeland Dantin led the sprinters with runner-up times in the 200-meter dash (23.35) and 400 meters (53.50). He was third in the 100 meters in11.58.
In the 800, Richard finished second in 2:17.35, followed by Seth Turner (2:22.41, third), Maxwell New (2:24.33, fourth) and Jeremy Martinez (2:25.63, fifth). Martinez also added an eighth-place finish in the 1,600 at 5:17.41 and took third in the 3,200 in 11:39.85.
In the hurdles, Braxtyn Newberry placed sixth in the 110 meters (21.14) and fourth the 300 meters (50.51). Few finished seventh in the 110 (21.19) and sixth in the 300 (53.57). Ian Dantin was eighth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 22.46.
The Bobcats also saw success in the relays as the The 4x100-meter team placed first place in 45.68. The 4x800 quartet finished third in 9:29.32.
For the Lady Cats, Lilyan Cook won the discus with a throw of 99’ 8”, and Mattie Jones placed ninth at 53’ 7”. In the shot put, Cook finished second with a heave of 31’ 11”, Lizzy Kucera was fifth at 24’ 4” and Jones placed sixth with a mark of 23’ 7”.
Isabella Evans finished second in the long jump with a leap of 14’ 4” while Macie Baxter was ninth at 11’ 11”. Gianelle Curbelo placed 10th at 10’ 5”.
In running events, Jennifer Garcia clocked in at 12:45.79 for second place in the 3,200 meter run. In the 1600 meters Garcia finished fifth in 5:58.45, and Ella Schwartz placed seventh in 6:28.47.
Lauren Smith took third in the 800 meter run in 2:48.38. Morgan Palmieri placed fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.41. Evans finished fifth in the 200 meters in 29.51. Tara Becerra was seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 1:16.50.
Cook placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles in 21.39. Kayla Tercero was fifth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.53.
Dawson was the No. 1 girls team with 159 points ahead of Pickens (74). Union and GHS both scored 35, and Cherokee (14) was fifth. Dawson (126.5) also the top boys team followed by Cherokee (70), Gilmer (66), Pickens (56.5) and Union (32).
