Rain showers washed away many of the events in the county last week.
Gilmer High tennis was able to dodge the rain drops for two days and took on the same opponent. The Bobcats and Lady Cats hosted the Fannin County Rebels last Tuesday and both won, 4-1.
GHS hit the road the next day to make the short trip to Blue Ridge. Once again, the Bobcats and Lady Cats were victorious by a 4-1 margin.
On both days, a pro-8 set scoring format was used. In their first matchup, No. 1 single Eder Martinez lost 8-4, while Nathan Hall earned an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 spot. Fannin only had two boys in its lineup and forfeited the remaining three matches.
The Lady Cats secured a pair of wins on the singles court. No. 2 Madison Bradshaw came out on top, 8-4, and No. 3 Lucy Ray rolled to an 8-2 triumph. Gilmer’s Charlotte Davenport and Katelyn Campbell teamed up for an 8-0 win on the No. 2 doubles court.
The Lady Rebels notched wins of 8-3 in both the No. 1 singles and doubles matches.
Bobcat Rylan Freeman led 9-8, and he won the tiebreaker, 7-3. The Rebels won the top singles match and forfeited three matches once again.
The Lady Cats shuffled their lineup in their rematch with the Lady Rebels, but the outcome remained the same.
Lyla Engle and Lyric Lowman won in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots by scores of 8-1 and 8-2. Bradshaw and Ray joined forces on the No. 1 doubles court and won handily, 8-0.
Davenport and Campbell did not face much resistance in their No. 2 doubles match and were victorious, 8-2.
FCHS got its lone win in No. 1 singles action, 8-3.
Gilmer opened its season Feb. 14 versus Pickens. The Lady Cats fell 4-1, and the Bobcats were downed, 5-0.
Gilmer faced Coahulla Creek Monday evening and the Bobcats were downed, 5-0. The Lady Cats were defeated 4-1 as Engle secured a win of 6-0, 6-0.
GHS hosted Pickens at press deadline. The Cats will travel to Cherokee Wednesday and to West Hall Thursday. All matches are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
