Gilmer High tennis took advantage of a brief break in the clouds to play a region match.
Inclement weather led the cancellation and postponement of many events at GHS last week, but West Hall was in town Thursday for the match.
The Bobcats snagged a win on the singles court and won both doubles matches for a 3-2 team victory. The Lady Cats’ wins came on the doubles court as well in a 3-2 defeat.
No. 1 Bobcat single Eder Martinez got GHS on the board with his 6-2, 6-4 win. Top doubles Kolby Reece and J.D. Taylor won in straight sets without losing a game. The No. 2 team of Alex Miltiades and Chase Little secured the team victory with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph.
West Hall defeated No. 2 single Nathan Hall (6-1, 6-2) and No. 3 Miles West (6-0, 6-0).
For the Lady Cats, No. 1 doubles Lucy Ray and Madison Bradshaw came out on top 6-4, 6-3 after dropping the first set, 6-4. The No. 2 tandem of Bree Burnette and Chelsey Griggs were victorious 6-2, 6-3.
WHHS won the singles matches. In the No. 1 position, Lyla Engle’s opening set concluded 7-6 in her opponent’s favor, and Engel lost the tiebreaker, 7-4. She came away with a 6-4 victory in set two before dropping the third by the same margin.
No. 2 single Lyric Lowman lost 6-0, 6-2, and Katelyn Campbell was defeated 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot.
A recap of Gilmer’s Monday evening match versus Pickens will appear in next week’s Times-Courier.
The Bobcats are 3-2 on the season and the Lady Cats are 0-5.
