The Gilmer High Bobcats and Lady Cats hit the tennis court for four matches last week.
GHS hosted Fannin Monday, and the Lady Cats won 4-1. Gilmer traveled to Cherokee Bluff Tuesday and lost 5-0 to the Bears before a 3-2 defeat the next day at Pickens. The Cats concluded the week Thursday at home against Dawson County and lost, 5-0.
Following the Bobcats’ 3-2 win over Fannin, their remaining matches all ended with scores of 5-0. Gilmer lost to Cherokee Bluff and Dawson and defeated Pickens.
Pro-8 set scoring was used versus Fannin, and Lady Cat No. 1 single Ollie Burnett got Gilmer’s first win, 9-7. No. 3 single Lyla Engle won 8-4 ahead of two doubles wins. The GHS top tandem of Ellie Teague and Jessica Futch came out on top, 8-2, and Charlotte Davenport and Lucky Ray won, 8-3. FCHS was victorious in the No. 2 singles spot, 8-4.
Engle (6-0, 6-0) and doubles Ray and Madison Bradshaw (6-4, 6-4) downed their Pickens’ foes while Burnett (6-3, 6-3) and Lyric Lowman (6-1, 6-1) lost. Futch and Teague earned a 6-2 win in the second set sandwiched between losses of 6-2 and 6-4.
Against Cherokee Bluff, singles Burnett (6-0, 6-4), Engle (6-1, 6-1) and Bradshaw (6-2, 6-0) fell, as did doubles Teague and Futch (6-1, 6-1) and Ray and Hannah Lowman (6-1, 6-0).
Futch and Teague were victorious 6-4 in their opening set versus Dawson before losses of 6-4 and 7-5. Bradshaw and Ray won one game in their doubles matche, and Lyric Lowman was shut out. Burnett lost 6-0, 6-4, and Eagle was toppled, 6-0, 6-2.
The Bobcats claimed wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches versus Fannin as Ethan Cole and Kolby Reece both won, 8-3. GHS sealed the team win with Larz Fowler’s and Miles West’s 8-5 victory in the No. 2 doubles position.
FCHS won the top singles (8-6) and doubles (8-5) matches.
Cherokee Bluff downed Gilmer’s top single Law Lykins, No. 2 Cole and No. 1 doubles Eder Martinez and Rylan Freeman without losing a game. Reece lost 6-3, 6-1, and Ethan Banks and J.D. Taylor fell in the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-1, 6-2.
The Bobcats reversed their fortunes and swept Pickens the next day. Singles winners included Cole (6-1, 6-4), Lykins (6-1, 6-0) and Reece (6-2, 6-1). Martinez and Freeman kept the victories coming (6-4, 7-5), and Banks and Taylor closed out the match, 6-2, 6-2.
Dawson got the clean sweep Thursday with singles wins over Cole (6-4, 6-0), Lykins (6-0, 6-1) and Reece (6-1, 6-0). Doubles Martinez and Freeman were defeated (6-0, 6-3) and Banks and Taylor lost, 6-2, 6-3.
The Bobcats are 3-4 overall, and the Lady Cats’ record sits at 2-5. GHS traveled to East Forsyth Tuesday and will host West Hall Thursday at 4 p.m.
