As the swim season winds down, Gilmer High School was back in Dalton for its latest meet.
The North Georgia Region Championships drew 11 teams last Saturday, and the GHS Bobcats and Lady Cats were there in an attempt to achieve qualifying times for state.
Gilmer swimmers combined for nine appearances in the finals. Bobcat Cheyne Smith turned in the best individual placement in the 100-yard freestyle. His time of 57.52 allowed him to finish fourth, and he took seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:21.67).
Both of the Lady Cats’ relay teams reached the finals. In the 200-freestyle, the team of Esther Bowman, Elizabeth Kucera, Yana Jones and Evan May were fourth in 2:02.28. Lana Ginger and Rosalie Ballew stepped in for Kucera and Bowman in the 200-yard medley for ninth place (3:03.46).
May claimed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:24.11 and placed ninth in the 50-freestyle (32.34). Bowman competed in a pair of finals as well. She landed in seventh in the 100 breast (1:28.46) and ninth in the 50 free (30.61).
Kucera went on to finish 10th in the 100 free (1:13.87).
Three Lady Cats competed in the 50 free finals and included Jones (14th, 33.15), Ginger (24th, 38.42) and Ballew (35th, 55.17). In the 100 free, Jones finished 15th (1:25.27) and Ginger was 24th (1:36.53).
Clifford Defoor swam in two preliminary events and placed 13th in the 100-yard backstroke (2:01.28) and 35th in the 50 free (42.30). Connor Defoor finished 23rd in the 100 free (1:27.93) and was 30th in the 20 free (36.46).
