Gilmer High was back on the softball field for a mix of region and nonregion matchups.
GHS hit the road last Monday at Dawson County. The Tigers kept the Cats’ offensive under wraps and earned a 5-0 victory. Gilmer hosted Pickens the following day, and the Cats’ southern rival rallied for a pair of runs in its final at-bat to down GHS, 2-1.
Gilmer was at home Friday as well versus nonregion opponent Cass. The Colonels churned out 15 hits and its nine-run sixth inning ended the game early, 18-3.
Zoey Woody, Jaylee McDaniel and KateLynn Carder each had a hit to account for all of the Cats’ offense versus Dawson. The Tigers spread six hits across six at-bats and took advantage of three GHS errors for a pair of unearned runs.
The Tigers struck for a run in the first, third and fourth innings, and added two more runs in the fifth.
Lily Fortune pitched all six innings for GHS and struck out seven, walked three and allowed six hits.
Fortune found herself in a pitchers’ duel versus Pickens. She held the Dragonettes to three hits while striking out 12 and walking two.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. McDaniel’s triple plated Woody, who reached base with a one-out single.
PHS responded in its next at-bat. After a strikeout, a base hit to left was followed by consecutive doubles to give Pickens the runs needed.
Gilmer was retired in order in its final at-bat. Sarah Dale and Woody each had two hits on the day and Phoenix Addie had one.
Cass did most of its damage with the top of its lineup. Its first four hitters combined for 12 hits and 13 RBIs. The Colonels scored in every inning but the third. They led 2-1 after the first, 6-1 after the third and 8-1 through four at-bats. CHS added another run in the fifth inning.
GHS lost 6-0 to Wesleyan Monday evening. They host Dawson Wednesday and West Hall Thursday for respective games at 5 and 5:30 p.m.
