The Gilmer Lady Cats were back on the softball diamond for two more region games.
GHS hosted the Dawson County Tigers last Tuesday, and the two battled it out in a low-scoring affair. Only one run was scored, and it was the Tigers who slipped by with a 1-0 win.
The Cats were in Pickens two days later. The host Dragonettes were able to muster a bit more offense than Dawson, and GHS could not match their run production. PHS built a daunting lead and brought an early end to the game en route to an 8-0 victory.
Dawson collected eight hits. After two batters, the Tigers held a 1-0 lead, which accounted for all of the game’s runs. DCHS was able to draw a leadoff walk, and an ensuing double gave them the 1-0.
Gilmer batters struck out 12 times. The Cats’ lone hit came in their last at-bat when Sarah Dale’s leadoff single ended Dawson’s no-hitter. Lily Fortune pitched all seven innings for GHS. She gave up seven hits, an earned run and struck out four and walked two.
Pickens outhit GHS 8-3, and three Dragonette runs were due to Lady Cat errors.
PHS struck for three runs in the second. While they did produce two hits, they took advantage of three walks and a Lady Cat error to jump ahead, 3-0.
Three straight hits to start the fifth extended Pickens’ lead to five. Following a double, a GHS wild pitch added another PHS run. A Gilmer passed ball bought Pickens’ run tally to seven. A single and error plated the Dragonettes’ eighth and final run.
Phoenix Addie, Sierra Williams and Jaylee McDaniel each had a hit for GHS. Fortune surrendered seven hits, five earned runs and four walks while striking out five in three innings pitched. Woody pitched an inning of relief work and gave up a hit.
Gilmer traveled to Wesleyan Monday evening, and a full recap will appear in next week’s Times-Courier. GHS is 0-13 overall and plays at West Hall Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
