The Gilmer Lady Cats snatched a region soccer win with a penalty shootout.
GHS was at West Hall last Saturday, and the Cats and Spartans were knotted at 2-2 at the end of regulation. Following two overtime periods, penalty kicks decided the game, and GHS came out ahead, 3-1.
WHHS went up early before its offense went dormant for the remainder of the first and second halves. The Spartans broke loose on a breakaway and netted a goal after only six minutes of play.
A West Hall foul with 6:30 to play set up a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Lady Cat Yenifer Lopez took the shot and tied the game to force a pair of 10-minute overtime periods.
GHS coach Adam Palmer switched formations at the half and the Cats played a 3-4-3. For overtime, he added an extra defender as GHS shifted into a 4-4-2. Calli Wise’s goal seven minutes into overtime moved the Cats ahead. WHHS answered with a goal off a free kick 45 seconds later.
After a scoreless second overtime, a shootout was needed. Lopez made the first attempt before each team missed. GHS goalkeeper Amayah Jones saved the Spartans’ second shot.
Salma Gonzalez moved GHS ahead, 2-0, and West Hall made its third attempt. Gimena Domingo-Tercero converted her attempt, and Jones saved the Spartans’ ensuing kick to seal the win.
GHS faced Adairsville Monday evening and lost, 3-0. The Cats have an 8-5 record and are 1-2 in the region. Gilmer hosts Pickens Friday at 5:30 p.m.
