Gilmer split with region foes to end the season.
The Gilmer High Lady Cats played its final two softball games on the road, and they were in West Hall last Tuesday. GHS errors aided the Spartans’ cause, but the Cats came through with late-inning hits for a 6-5 victory.
Gilmer made the trek to Wesleyan the following day, and the region-leading Wolves held Gilmer’s offense in check and won, 13-1.
While the Cats have played from behind for much of the season, this time they were the ones who took control of the game.
With two outs in the first, senior Zoey Woody’s clutch double kept the inning alive. Phoenix Addie’s base hit to right gave the Cats an early advantage. WHHS evened the score in its half of the first, and after a scoreless second inning, Gilmer strung together more hits in the third.
Sarah Dale led off the inning with a double and scored when fellow freshman Jaylee McDaniel doubled to center. Another Woody single added a third run, and when a Spartan could not handle Addie’s line drive to right, the Cats moved ahead, 4-1.
An RBI single with two outs in their half of the inning added a run to the Spartans’ tally, and they took the lead in the fourth. None of West Hall’s three runs were earned, and Gilmer trailed, 5-4.
The Spartans then committed three errors in the fifth, and GHS was able to tie the score. The Cats pulled ahead for good when Addie blasted a home run over the center field fence.
Lily Fortune started the game for GHS and pitched 3 2/3 innings and struck out six, walked two and gave up seven hits. Dale pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up tree hits ans struck out two and walked one.
Wesleyan needed four innings to claim their win Wednesday. The Wolves collected seven hits and four GHS errors led to five unearned runs. They belted four doubles and a home run and plated two runs in the first and third innings, four in the second and five in the fourth.
Gilmer’s lone run came in its half of the fourth. Woody doubled for the Cats’ only hit and scored when Addie reached on an error.
GHS pitching: Fortune 2 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 3 BB. Dale 1 1/3 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 K, 6 BB. Addie 1 H.
Gilmer finished with a 4-23 record on the season.
