Gilmer High continued its early-season nonregion soccer slate last week.
The GHS Lady Cats were on the road for all three games, and the first was held Tuesday versus the Trion Bulldogs. Goals came in bunches for the Cats, and they trounced Trion, 8-0.
GHS made its way to Murray County Wednesday and came away with a 2-2 draw. Gilmer headed that way again Friday versus North Murray, and the Mountaineers earned a 3-0 win.
Five Lady Cats netted goals versus Trion as the Bulldog goalkeeper was constantly picking the ball out of her own net.
Reagan Boling tallied three goals for the Cats and Sophia Lykins, Yenifer Lopez, Carly Becerra and Yesica Tercero each added a goal.
“We had a game plan, and we executed it well. Coach Josh Fountain and I were really proud of how well the girls played,” said head coach April Nicholson.
The match versus Murray County gave Nicholson the opportunity to get some of her younger players on the field.
“I took a lot of my junior varsity players to get them some game-time experience. We’ve had a number of JV games canceled, so I’m trying to get them some experience when I can,” Nicholson explained. “The kids always enjoy playing them because they have a lot of friends and family who attend Murray County and play soccer.”
Becerra and Yenifer Lopez scored for the Cats.
GHS was without Boling Friday and others were sidelined by injuries.
“We got off to a really slow start on Friday night, and we’re still trying to put girls in the right places,” Nicholson said. “Goalkeepers Kaitlin Henderson and Brooke Wilson had a great game, and we had opportunities, but unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalize on them.”
The GHS Bobcats defeated Trion (2-1) and Murray County (1-0) and lost to North Murray (2-1). They have a 3-2 record on the season.
The Lady Cats are 1-3-1 overall and will travel to Union County Wednesday before hosting Dalton Academy Friday. Both games are set to start at 5 p.m., and the Bobcats will take the field at 7 p.m.
