The Gilmer Lady Cats got their first region soccer win of the season.
GHS was in Pickens last Friday to face the Dragonettes. The rivalry battle turned out to be a one-sided affair as the Cats came away with a decisive 3-0 victory.
Gilmer hosted Lumpkin County for senior night three days earlier. The high-octane Indians brought an early end to the game in the second half with their 11-1 win.
Against Pickens, Gilmer’s sophomore trio of Faith Goodwin, Carly Becerra and Yenifer Lopez were its goal scorers. Goodwin gave the Cats a 1-0 lead in the first half when she ran away from PHS defenders.
Becerra got behind a through ball for a goal in the second half, and Lopez moved Gilmer ahead 3-0 from the penalty spot.
Gilmer used three players in goal last week, and Amayah Jones kept a clean sheet in her first start versus the Dragonettes.
“The team played together and maintained composure to secure the region victory despite a very tightly officiated game,” said head coach Adam Palmer.
Lumpkin got on the board seven and a half minutes into the game when the ball deflected off a GHS player and across the goal line. Five minutes later, an Indian run down the left wing came before a centered pass and goal.
At the midpoint of the half, a 22-yard shot gave LCHS a 3-0 edge. The ball then got through Gilmer’s goalkeeper’s hands and into the net 13 minutes before the half. Lumpkin added its fifth goal two minutes later when GHS was unable to clear the ball out of the 18-yard box.
An Indian forward picked her way past Gilmer’s back line for a sixth goal just before the break.
LCHS added two more goals to its tally 10 minutes into the second half. They went ahead 9-0 with 25 minutes left on the clock.
Two minutes later, Gilmer was able to break through for a goal. Lumpkin was unable to clear the ball on a GHS corner, and Selma Gonzalez was there to pelt the ball into the net from close range.
Ahead 9-1, the Indians’ 10th goal came with 14:15 remaining, and they ended the match with a breakaway goal less than a minute later.
Gilmer has a 4-5-1 record and will travel to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Thursday for a 5 p.m. match.
